Louis Riel: Louis Riel was born in 1844 in Red River. He was a well educated child and at the age of 14 he went to Montreal and studied for 10 years to become a Catholic priest. He left his studies and fell in love with a woman whose family didn't agree on the marriage because he was Métis. By the time Riel was 25 he was politically involved in the rights of the peoples of the North-West. In 1884 the Métis decided Louis Riel would be their leader to get the government to pay attention to their petitions (Unit 5 - The Metis List of Rights.). <-Thomas Scott was killed by Riel because he was a part of a group that tried to attack Fort Garry.
Riel was disliked in Ontario and he was admired and supported in Quebec, John A. Macdonald decided to send troops to Manitoba to arrest Riel. Louis Riel had fled to the United States before the troops came and with no sight of Riel they killed two of Riel's friends.
John A. Macdonald gave Riel money to go into exile, Riel was twice elected to Parliament but he was never able to take his seat. Riel hid from the law for many years and had a nervous breakdown and thought he was the prophet of the new world. On June 3rd 1885 Riel was finally arrested and charged with treason. Riel was hanged in Regina on November 16, 1885. The Métis today still think of Riel as a hero, the argument to pardon him continues today.
